Your challenges – our solutions!

A reliable and stable energy and water supply are important basic requirements for a functioning social and economic life.

The challenges for electricity suppliers are becoming increasingly complex due to many decentralised and irregular feeds of energy such as wind and photovoltaic plants, and the growing e-mobility consumption. For these reasons, electricity grids should not only be expanded, but also automated. The secure digital networking of many electricity generators and consumers requires a crisis-proof and stable communication infrastructure.
As a leading manufacturer in the energy and water supply segment, we are committed to mastering these challenges with our intelligent and powerful hardware and software solutions.

Use cases of LTE450

Better penetration to hard-to-reach locations

LTE450 offers excellent mobile network coverage due to the frequency bands in the 450 MHz range. These long-wave frequencies have a much wider propagation and increased penetration of obstacles than the much shorter radio waves of standard mobile communications. This is particularly helpful for locations that are difficult to reach by radio and often enables radio coverage underground, in basements or shafts. Even installations in rural areas with previously insufficient standard network coverage can be reached by LTE450. Since these conditions often apply to facilities in the energy and water industry, the use of this frequency band is well tailored to the requirements of critical infrastructure.

Fallback when DSL or fibre connection is cut

More often than one might suspect, lines are cut, especially by excavation work, which interrupts the connection. In this case, systems in critical infrastructures have a failover function so that an uninterrupted communication can be guaranteed. In the event of a line disconnection, the system automatically connects to the mobile network.

Secure even in times of crisis

The LTE450 networks are designed to ensure a secure radio connection even in times of crisis. Even in the event of nationwide power failures (blackouts or load shedding), LTE450 continues to be available through emergency power supplies. Even flood scenarios are covered by prudent siting of the radio masts and a flood-proof communication link. To rule out congestion in an emergency, there is well-considered network planning for each radio cell and, if necessary, prioritisation of applications with high criticality.

Our solution: simply stay flexible!

Our solution is characterised above all by: Flexibility for every application!

As the MRX routers are modular, further access technologies such as DSL and fibre optics can be freely combined with the LTE450-MRcard and consolidated in one device. The redundant connection then guarantees double protection if one connection type fails.

Do you already have devices from our MRX series in operation and now want to use LTE450 as an additional connection type?

No problem, existing devices can be expanded cost-effectively and easily with the MRcard PL450.

Even more flexibility is offered by the ability to combine the LTE450 and the standard LTE network. This is a valuable feature, as the hardware can be used even before the new LTE450 mobile networks are available.

High functioning security and limitation of the number of subscribers to the LTE450 networks result in comparatively high costs for customers, but by using a second SIM card that accesses the standard LTE network, situational switching and cost optimisation is possible in the case of applications with high data requirements.

Membership of the 450 MHz Alliance

The 450 MHz Alliance is an industry association representing the interests of 450 MHz spectrum representatives. Members include companies in the mobile communications industry, equipment manufacturers and companies representing various vertical markets for machine-to-machine communication.

INSYS icom has been a member of the 450 MHz Alliance since mid-2022 in order to use synergy effects, exchange knowledge and advance LTE450 technology in joint dialogue with association members.

German provider for our LTE450 solution

The provider 450connect is working on the expansion of the fail-safe and highly available 450 MHz radio network. This offers operators of critical infrastructures comprehensive security of supply and smooth operation.

Due to the good propagation characteristics of the 450 MHz frequency band, comparatively few antenna sites are required, thus enabling a rapid expansion.

Frequently asked questions

With our productmanager Heiko Noll

How and when will the LTE450 network be available in Germany or Austria?

The German provider 450connect will start network availability in parts of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia from March 2023. Nationwide coverage with LTE450 is planned for 2025. The Austrian provider ArgoNET already offers coverage in many parts of the country.

I need to modernise, but LTE450 is not yet rolled out at my location – what can I do?

If there is other mobile coverage at the planned location, this can be used to operate with the LTE450 router. Our LTE450 devices additionally support the existing mobile radio technologies and also offer a switching option by using two SIM cards. When alternately using LTE450 and standard mobile radio, make sure to use a combination antenna that supports the higher standard LTE frequencies in addition to LTE450.

How can I integrate LTE450 into our existing infrastructure?

The modular router MRX is easily expandable with the MRcard PL450 and can be combined with common access technologies such as DSL and fibre.

Do I have to use LTE450?

So far there are no obligations to use LTE450. However, it is becoming apparent that LTE450 will become a de facto standard for critical installations in the energy and water sectors. There is also the possibility that the associations operating there will then issue recommendations for action regarding the use of LTE450.

Are LTE450 SIM cards available to everyone?

LTE450 SIM cards are only available for players in the critical infrastructure sector. In Germany these are distributed by the provider 450connect and in Austria by ArgoNET. INSYS cannot distribute the cards further, but can carry out a pre-installation of the SIM card if required when the routers are delivered.

Is LTE450 another new hype that will die out in a few years?

No! Although many different radio standards have appeared and partially disappeared in the IoT sector in the last decade, this does not apply to LTE450. The radio service for critical infrastructures is designed by the provider 450connect for a minimum availability until 2040.

The technology is new, does INSYS already have enough experience with it?

LTE450 is based on the well-known LTE technology, so there is no risk of major “teething problems”. Our proven suppliers are already using LTE450 abroad and we are in close exchange with European providers and key customers, some of whom have several years of experience through test installations.

Do I need a special antenna for LTE450?

Yes, because the frequency bands used by LTE450 at 450 MHz are significantly lower than the standard mobile radio frequency bands, which are in the 700 … 2600 MHz range. Depending on the application, either a pure 450 MHz antenna can be used or a combination antenna that also supports the frequency bands of the public mobile radio networks.

Why is LTE450 using a 4G standard, why not 5G?

5G technology has other objectives, such as very high data rates or lowest latency, which do not offer any added value for critical infrastructure applications. Therefore, the proven LTE technology is used worldwide for the implementation of crisis-proof radio networks.

Which frequency bands are used in the 450 MHz frequency range?

LTE450 uses the LTE bands 31 and 72. In Germany and Austria band 72 is currently used, in some other countries band 31. The bands consist of separate areas for uplink and downlink. Band 31: 452.5 – 457.5 MHz (UL) and 462.5 – 467.5 MHz (DL). Band 72: 451 – 456 MHz (UL) and 461 – 466 MHz (DL).

Why is the 450 MHz radio frequency so important for the energy industry?

The low 450 MHz radio frequency offers significantly better propagation compared to all other higher mobile radio frequencies and also reaches previously inaccessible installations. LTE450 thus ensures optimal radio coverage and is therefore used proprietarily for critical infrastructure in many countries. Due to the decentralised power generation through renewable energies, the energy industry is currently working on the digital transformation of its networks and therefore needs many new communication connections. LTE450 plays a key role in this.
