Perform PLC remote maintenance easily and securely

Industrial remote access to programmable logic controllers (PLCs) plays an important role in industrial and building automation. Anyone who wants to access a PLC remotely needs a secure connection in order to carry out maintenance, control and data acquisition independently of location. The connection must not only be secure, but also flexible and easy to set up – even without specialised IT knowledge.

With an industrial router from INSYS icom, an M2M SIM card (via cellular network) and the VPN service icom Connectivity Suite – VPN, remote access and PLC remote maintenance become quick and easy – for a wide range of PLC systems.

  • Add the configuration PC and router to the VPN network

Step 2:

Connect & configure the router

  • Attach SIM card and antenna, establish power supply and connect to the configuration PC via Ethernet
  • Configure the router via the quick-start wizard in the browser

Step 3:

Connect the controller

  • Connect the programmable logic controller to the router
  • Check the IP settings

Step 4:

Establish remote access

  • Connect the remote access PC to the icom Connectivity Suite
  • Start browser or PLC programming environment and connect to PLC via remote access connection – done
  • Alternatively: Use access via web proxy (no VPN client required on the remote access PC)

PLC remote maintenance – Frequently asked questions

What can I do if my PLC is not listed?

Our solution supports a wide range of common PLC systems and manufacturers. If your controller is not explicitly listed in the overview, industrial remote access is still possible in many cases. A manufacturer-independent guide explains the basic steps for online connectivity. In addition, manufacturer-specific guides are available for many common controllers.

Can I also use my own SIM card?

In principle, yes. However, please note that PLC remote maintenance requires a dedicated machine-to-machine (M2M) SIM card. Standard consumer SIM cards are not suitable for the long-term and stable operation of industrial applications.

I don’t want to use a cellular radio connection – what are the alternatives?

No problem, the VPN connection can also be established via DSL, fiber optic, LAN or WLAN. The setup steps remain the same; only the M2M SIM card is not required. This allows you to flexibly adapt PLC remote maintenance to your existing infrastructure.

Where can I get the right devices?

All the components you need – from industrial routers, M2M SIM cards and suitable accessories to VPN services – for industrial remote access are available directly from INSYS icom. This means you get everything from a single source and perfectly harmonised.
