E-world: Secure integration of control technology in new and existing facilities

Regensburg, 17.01.2019 – At E-world energy & water, INSYS icom, a leading producer of industrial data communication and networking technology, presents products and solutions for the connection of control centres and renewable energy systems. The company’s trade fair highlights are its new plug-in cards for the MRX modular router series and the icom OAM central device management. In line with the topic of smart energy, visitors can experience a live demo at the INSYS icom stand 4-320 in Hall 4.

Future-proof and flexible with modular hardware

The MRX modular router series is the starting platform for the flexible connection of control technology and renewable energy systems in compliance with Germany’s KRITIS regulations. The new plug-in cards (MRcards) enable low-cost updates to future standards (e.g. fiber optics), and are particularly suitable for use in the energy and water sectors.

With the MRcard Fiber the router connects distant wind turbines, transformer stations or substations to the control centre via fibre optics. The MRcard I/O has both analogue and digital inputs and outputs, for example to connect sensors and actuators, monitor their values and communicate them to the control centre. Using its mobile phone interface the MRcard PLS creates redundancy and can connect existing devices via RS232.

Protocol conversion included

In addition to secure and flexible communication connections, the routers offer a wealth of data processing and control options in-built. Intelligent protocol conversion is enabled by the icom Data Suite. Among other things, it supports the IEC 60870-5-104/101, Modbus and MQTT protocols for connecting telecontrol systems to central SCADA and monitoring systems.

This can also be implemented for small installations or existing facilities (retrofitting) with an attractive cost-benefit ratio.

Central management of INSYS icom routers

In addition, INSYS icom offers the icom OAM (Operations, Administration & Maintenance) on-premises service for central device management. When multiple routers are used, central device management significantly simplifies their operation, administration and maintenance. Updating the device firmware, incremental changes to device configurations and the provision of certificates can be implemented in a simple, resource-saving way.
