These days, a ticket machine needs to perform tasks other than issuing tickets. Entire pricing systems need to be capable of being customised and controlled from a central location. Lines or routes that experience varying loads may be made busier or less busy, depending on the time, using variable prices. E.g. mobile ticketing solutions may be used for temporary car parks. Storing and transmitting data that provides usage information is a key task. Also feasible are applications such as the sending of tickets to mobile phones by SMS, or status messages indicating whether machines are working or whether they are full of consumables or money.
