VMO   Virtual mobile operator

A Virtual Mobile Operator (VMO) is a mobile phone service provider without an own mobile phone network. He rents the exclusive rights to use a portion of the network capacity of another company (infrastructure provider). The VMO offers his customers to use this capacity for closed user groups for example against payment. This business model is not new, but quick technological developments of the broadcasting technique and markets push on the change in the telecommunications business. The advantage of this business model is the avoidance of the time and cost consuming installation of own competitive structures as well as the reduction of operative risks by involving a competent service provider. An example for an infrastructure provider is the Deutsche Telekom with its GPRS network. The VMO IC3S forms a closed user group of GPRS devices and protected external access possibilities via the internet per customer with his product mdex fixed.IP as a service provider. The devices identify themselves during login and get always the same IP addresses. The alternative routing rules enable a free communication establishment among each other: mobile server, connections between mobile devices and polling from the master control are possible without restrictions. The restrictive security rules as in the general GPRS network still apply for devices, which do not belong to the own user group. Another advantage of the closed user group is the waiving of additional protocols, because this service takes place within the TCP/IP standard, so that no terminal devices must be adapted.

VPN   Virtual private network
